Alcatraz Island
At various points in time Alcatraz Island has been a lighthouse station, Civil War era fort and its most famous role as a prison from the 1930s through the 1960s. As a penitentiary, Alcatraz developed the nickname "The Rock," for its nearly impenetrable infrastructure.Over the years famous inmates included Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly among other notorious criminals. From 1969 to 1971, a group of Native Americans representing "Indians of All Tribes" occupied the then "abandoned" island until the government forcibly removed them. In 1972, The Rock became a Federal Recreation Area.
